Women, Buddhism, and Mindfulness

Women, Buddhism, and Mindfulness: A Dialogue with Pamela Weiss and Diana Winston

In the Buddhist tradition, teachings were passed down orally for several hundred years after the Buddha's death. When they were recorded, their tone and flavor were influenced by male monastic scribes who infused his words with bias, and systematically wrote women’s experiences and perspectives out of the narrative. Reweaving women’s stories back into teachings offers a fuller, rounder understanding of meditation practices and teachings.

In this evening conversation, Pamela and Diana Winston, Director of Mindfulness Education at MARC, will discuss how stories of Buddhist women and qualities of the feminine have affected them personally and transformed their understanding of mindfulness and meditation practice. Together they will share a vision of a more inclusive, inspiring experience of practice and awakening and its impact on the mindfulness field.
